Oh God

from Old Joy (demos) by Old Joy

about

wrote this at some point in 2012, recorded this version that fall while i had the swine flu. there's a better version of this, with drums and electric guitars and some kind of crazy southern rock harmonized guitar solo a la the allman brothers but i don't think i'll ever find it, so this will have to do.

lyrics

I was born in Illinois
And that’s probly where I’ll die
A deer in the headlights
Too shocked to say goodbye

I was raised on white lies
And with vinegar in my eyes
Some tears ain’t for cryin’
But I can compromise
Well I was born in Illinois
And that’s probly where I’ll die

Oh God.

She was born in Chapel Hill
In the moonlight and divine
Life’s bitter mystery
A shroud, a shred of sky
If I found her I could love her
I think I’m the only one
I believe in true despair
So I believe in true love
But she was born in Chapel Hill
And she’s probably found someone

Oh God

There’s some living
I should be doing
In the daylight, in the night
Or I could cling to comas, my God gave me that right
I’m a vulture circlin’ over
Some hulk of rotting love
God give me courage
To keep my head above
All the memories that would drown me
If they got into my eye
But I was born in Illinois
And that’s probly where I”ll die
