Life is Long 03:19
I'm not that good at keeping cool I get stressed out by your needs See your face, know it wants Something safe, & I can't front Cuz I know that I am just like you I always lie, you know its true, You can be very mean Too extreme Nasty words really hurt But I know you're in pain Even so, you're to blame There's no excuse for why you're loose And spouting off, spewing froth Like a bosssss You called me out, I called you up Just to doubt your come up I can't stand your success Hand-in-hand with my regrets I know you're getting scared you won't get there Not now or ever but Life is Long
2.
I Got A Job 02:25
I got a job, I'm doing what I should I got a job but I don't feel that good Work all day for little pay & I come home to no good I got a job, I give em all my time I got a job but I ain't saved a dime I work all day for little pay And I come home with no time
3.
They say friendly hands makes the work go faster But I've never got from my friends what I'm after Come on No I'm not sure what the hell I'm doing All I know is that I have to do it Come on It's like that fence... when you tell em its for their own good Pretty soon you've got the whole neighborhood Nobody gives it a closer look It's a good thing no one's read the book When you're down on your knees from the world's evil And it's hard to see the good in people I know You can take comfort & solace in loved ones Or maybe the person who you really loved once is gone It's like that fence: It's a job you know you have to do But you wish it could be done without you It's the best thing you could possibly do Get it done but leave no trace of you When you're gone there'll be no memory of you But the fence will still stand white & true
4.
Strange how beauty makes you cry Living makes you die And you can never buy time Love is pain by another name Fame's sought after in vain All you can really change is your name Men cannot choose when they lose all they have I find I ask myself a lot What I've really got And what I can give away "Heaven will be torn asunder The Earth will fall away" That's what all of the emperors say They cannot choose when they lose all they have God is lonely I know he must be sad up there Heaven is bare Way I see it, we all need it but we're scared nobody's there Heaven is bare
5.
I recall faces in the fall, VFW halls and the leaves from the trees On the street, like bodies under sheets Slick with rain as the past spreads like a stain I was weak, my heart was asleep as the cool November rain stung my cheek Half-adored, speeding up I-94 toward a big black door opening up a little more... Lived nine lives, swallowed ninety knives Finally felt fine when the last one cut the tie That bound me to the last vestige of you Like a ghost in the shell or a ghost in my shoe No one knows just where your Old Joy goes Hope you catch your favorite shows You live the life you chose No one knows just where your Old Joy goes Strike a pose, freeze a smile in time Place your bets, referee regrets Oh you give what you get, just haven't got it yet...

about

As cliche as it feels to say it already, "Go Away Evil" is my 'pandemic record' I guess. Recorded as my band and the world collapsed around me in the late summer and fall of 2020 the songs were originally conceptualized as B sides for singles off a full length I was recording at JAMDEK with the previous lineup of Old Joy. But in the midst of sessions half my band quit. I briefly considered calling the album "B Side Myself," since I was in many ways, but the album was completed with the last remaining band member, guitarist Mike Molitor, who with me formed the nucleus for the new live band.

"Go Away Evil" is a candle you can buy at the Greek Candle store in Greektown in Chicago, they also sell it as bath salts and floor wash. It's supposed to send Satan running from what I can tell of the illustration. If there ever was a time for Evil to go away I think now is it. The album title is kind of a command, a plea and a prayer all rolled into one. The songs on the record to me take a look at life, the imperfect perception of time passing, the fear of death, the anxiety of selling time for comfort, the blind ways we interact with a potentially beautiful world and the way our memories distort with the passage of time. All set against the backdrop of my band quitting, the world grinding to a standstill and my 28 year old brother dying all within 18 months of each other. It seems like a vain hope, but I really would love it if Evil went away, and im hoping this record helps with that in some small way.
